There may not be another home in California that has as many artifacts, collected from all over the world, used as instrumental building materials, amenities and highlights, yet maintaining its authentic Hacienda design. The home was the vision of local art dealer Frank Goss and his wife, who spent nine years collecting materials such as the plank flooring, which was recycled from ships that went down during the Civil War. All wood surfaces were finished with beeswax, and the trim color painted with artists’ pigments. The 16-inch walls and double-glazed windows contribute to smaller gas bills, as does the use of the five fireplaces, in this green sustainable design. There are six pages, single spaced, that list the detailing that went into this project, such as 125-year-old corbels, harvested from an old New Mexico hotel. Or, the 14,000 latillas, that were used in the ceiling design; a spruce found at the 8,000 foot level of Northern New Mexico, harvested & stripped by local artisan.
A modestly scaled home with honest materials, not unlike the grand Spanish Colonial Rivals of the 1920’s, the kitchen, for example was designed to reflect kitchens in northern Senora, Mexico from that same 1920s period. The entire home has rough-timbered open beam ceilings and the doors & windows were designed and fabricated by Santa Barbara craftsman Sergio Gaspardis to reflect the style seen at the Santa Barbara Mission. Most recently a wine tasting room and temperature controlled, glass & wrought iron, display room, were carefully crafted by an artisan over the course of a year. It may be the most uniquely beautiful wine room in the Country.
In addition to the impressive Living Room and romantic, but practical kitchen, the Master Bedroom, and second in suite “master”, all open onto the traditional covered porch, fronting on a courtyard lawn, water fountain and cozy fireplace for outdoor entertainment. There is one additional in-suite bedroom, an office and a sitting/reading room that is part of the Master Suite.
The hacienda fronts on Summit, with thick Spanish walls, gated entry, and wonderful oaks trees and terraces. The rear yard is only slightly sloped and has an entertainment area, with built-in BBQ, and unique stone table that can accommodate 12 guests. One last, but very artistic feature, is the free-form swimming pool that incorporates large boulders, a substantial waterfall, and an area at the shallow end that is a simulated sandy shore. There is also a pool cabaña, outdoor shower and bath.
All of these carefully implemented qualities are situated within an easy walk to Butterfly Beach, and all the restaurants and shops along the Lower Village. This splendid piece of art is the perfect resting place for those who love romance, the arts, and the classic feel of the Village.
